Quirky museums in Japan: You should visit the Yokohama Ramen Museum!

As a self-proclaimed ramen nerd, my husband was beyond excited when he discovered the Yokohama Ramen Museum in Shin-Yokohama. It’s just a short train ride from Tokyo or Kita-Kamakura, where we were living at the time. He put a lot of effort into convincing me to go, and I’m so glad he did!

The museum opened its doors on March 6, 1994, with the mission to celebrate and promote Japan's rich ramen culture. It showcases the history and regional varieties of this beloved dish. Inside, you’ll find eight different ramen shops, a gift shop, and even fun activities like a ramen-making class!

When we finally visited, I became such a fan that we started going back every few months! While my husband was thrilled to explore the various regional ramen styles, I was captivated by the museum's cool retro vibe that transports you back to 1958 Tokyo. I took some pictures during our visit in 2017, and I imagine not much has changed since then.

Now that we no longer live in Japan, my husband has been experimenting with making ramen from scratch. He’s gotten pretty good, and I love enjoying his tasty and healthy creations. Still, we miss the easy access to such a lovely and yummy place like the Yokohama Ramen Museum. If you find yourself in Japan, I definitely recommend spending a few hours there!

Have you visited any quirky museums? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
